Our solution

An accessible sustainability report in accordance with the GRI Standards, through which stakeholders gain insights into the airport’s impacts, sustainable initiatives and roadmap

A fresh start following the pandemic

Brussels Airport Company used the COVID-19 pandemic to reflect on its future: one in which sustainability is key. After all, the aviation sector can play a major role in the fight against global warming, and as a leading player in the European sector, so can the operator of Brussels Airport.

A new strategy called Shift 2027 puts into words the airport’s goals for a green transition. Among other things, it lays down Brussels Airport Company’s five sustainable priorities for the next five years. Quantitative targets and milestones are linked to various priorities, which are monitored via KPIs. With the Sustainability Report 2021, Brussels Airport Company documents Shift 2027 with two goals in mind: disclosing a first baseline measurement and bringing the sustainability strategy to the attention of all of its stakeholders

Data and storytelling

Pantarein handled the entire execution of the report: interviews, data gathering and visualisation, editing, layout, translation into French and English, and proofreading.

Through a workshop with the heads of reporting, we determined the level of ambition and the reporting format, and created a first concept for the report.

Based on interviews with experts and managers of the airport company, we laid down the groundwork for the strategy, and collected the relevant data and information for the year 2021. The five objectives and their targets make up the framework for the report. In the coming years, we intend to help Brussels Airport Company set up additional monitoring and supplement the data.

Alongside data, we also focused on storytelling when creating the report. Testimonials from employees and external partners, case studies and infographics ensure that the report is people-oriented, and stakeholders can recognise themselves within it. The report will be the foundation for consistent sustainability communication in the coming months.

With its sustainability report, Brussels Airport Company shows that it is aware of its impact on the climate and other environmental domains. The aviation sector as a whole needs to go green in order to have a future. Players like Brussels Airport Company can perform a key role in that much-needed transition.

In accordance with the GRI Standards

The result: A sustainability report created in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, the most widely used international standard for sustainability reporting. The report was published as an interactive PDF, and was given a prominent position within the redesigned sustainability page on the airport’s website.

Brussels Airport Company’s first sustainability report is intended to be used to inform and inspire partners around the world. It shows the public that the airport company is aware of its impact, is taking concrete steps to become more sustainable, and supports green aviation in general.

At Pantarein, we are happy to guide the airport towards further progress in the future, reducing carbon emissions and other impacts of aviation on people and planet after this first step.
