VUB

VUB presents its first ‘Report to Society’

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) characterises itself as an urban engaged university committed to a better world. In its first 'Report to Society', the VUB describes how it takes on its social responsibility in terms of sustainability, well-being, and inclusion. For a sustainability report with a high level of engagement, Pantarein is the perfect partner.

Our challenge

To create a sustainability report that doesn’t just focus on the environment and climate but, above all, places people at its core

Our solution

A transparent and accessible report describing VUB’s efforts, results and intentions in terms of sustainability, well-being, and inclusion

Metropolitan pioneer

VUB is an inclusive and highly engaged university in the centre of Brussels. As an urban engaged university, it cherishes both its Brussels roots and its diverse, international community. Day after day, VUB strives for sustainable and inclusive education, and for research that has a positive impact on society. The university aims to be a pioneer in the field of sustainable study, research and business. And in this regard, it wants to share its first steps with the rest of the world.

Strategic foundation

This strategic groundwork then became the foundation for comprehensive sustainability reporting. We linked the existing KPIs to the internal action plans and suggested a number of additional KPIs to improve consistency and increase transparency. We also added a performance table that clearly displayed the history of the KPIs. Because European universities may one day become subject to the CSRD – the European directive requiring companies to report on their impact on people and climate – we paid extra attention to reporting on ethical conduct and governance. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) function as the framework for the entire report.

Extensive report

VUB called on us to create a transparent and accessible sustainability report focusing on both people and planet. We started the process with an analysis of VUB’s internal policies and action plans. We particularly focussed on the action plans for sustainability, well-being and inclusion. Based on this thorough analysis, we first wrote a strategic brochure on sustainability in 2022. In this, we translated the available action plans into a more readable format, and outlined their position in the general VUB policy.

Attractive product

Pantarein took care of the Report to Society’s copywriting and graphic design. Editorially, we opted for a fluent and accessible style that appeals to a broad audience. In terms of layout, we chose an attractive design that is easy to read as an online PDF, but equally allows for a limited print run of the report

As European universities may become subject to the CSRD requirements in the future, we have already taken steps in that direction.
