Sustainable high voltage: Lamifil’s climate plan

For 95 years, Lamifil has been a leading manufacturer of cables, wires and products made of copper, aluminium and their alloys. The Hemiksem-based company’s products can be found everywhere: from high-voltage cables powering millions of people through the overhead wires that run our trains to everyday consumer products. In order to develop its ESG strategy and climate plan, Lamifil called in Pantarein’s help.

Our challenge - Develop an ESG strategy and climate transition plan

Our solution - An ESG roadmap and sustainability report, developed from A to Z

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) has been high on the agenda in the manufacturing industry in recent years, and thus also at Lamifil. Questions from stakeholders and legal obligations such as the CSRD have inspired the company to develop an ESG strategy and roadmap focusing on its biggest impacts, risks and opportunities. As copper and aluminium are important materials for the company, topics related to critical raw materials and reliable supply chain partners were obvious. Given its close ties to the energy sector, other questions also presented themselves: What does the energy transition mean for a player like Lamifil? How does Lamifil position itself concerning its own CO2 emissions? How can it play its role as a driver of the green transition? Based on extensive research into those questions, combined with a thorough stakeholder analysis, Pantarein further developed the ESG strategy together with Lamifil’s management.

CO2 at the core

In 2023, we started the double materiality analysis and wrote Lamifil’s ESG report, which was integrated – together with the financial results – into the Annual Report for the first time. From the beginning of our collaboration, a major emphasis was placed on the carbon footprint. The first step was to calculate scope 1 and 2 emissions, a challenging task for such a large manufacturer. Because Lamifil requires high temperatures to melt metals, the share of natural gas in the company’s emissions is significant.

With its products, the company supports the global energy transition and helps reduc across various sectors. We integrated these opportunities into theESG roadmap, aptly named: ‘Connecting with the Future, Each Other, OurEnvironment and Our Customers’.

“Lamifil makes an important contribution to society and the energy supply. Our ESG and carbon roadmap is crucial for aligning our business operations with the future.”

Focus on scope 3

We are currently working hard to calculate the scope 3 emissions. Most of the emissions in Lamifil’s value chain will come from the purchase of metals. Thanks to the scope 3 calculation, we can also finally capture other impacts in specific figures; information that is essential to subsequently draw up the decarbonization and climate transition plan.

Meanwhile, preparations for the next Annual Report are in full swing: it will be the last edition before Lamifil’s first CSRD-compliant report in 2026. At the same time, Pantarein is helping to integrate the CSRD trajectory among all employees, using the right communication tools. One thing is clear: this company does not want to miss its connection with the future.
